Thermogravimetry (TG) is a technique based on continuous measurement of the mass changes of a substance subjected to pre-programmed temperatures, as a function of temperature or time in a controlled atmosphere ( e.g. vacuum pressure and inert gas). Or utilizing the rate-controlled method where the pre-programmed value of the weight changes urges the temperature change necessarily to achieve and maintain the desired weight-change rate.

Thermogravimetry Analysis (TGA) is used primarily to determine the form of materials and to predict their thermal stability at temperatures up to 1000℃. Thermogravimetric analyser is also used to investigate oxidative stability, moisture volatiles content and decomposition kinetics of materials, as well as reveal the effect on materials of reactive or corrosive atmospheres and estimate lifetime of a product.

TGA is used in the research & development of various substances and engineering materials – solid or liquid – in order to obtain knowledge about their thermal stability and composition. In recent decades, TGA has been used increasingly for the quality control and assurance of raw materials and incoming goods as well as for failure analysis of finished parts, especially in the polymer processing industry.

NETZSCH instruments for thermogravimetry have a compact design and are equipped with high-resolution balance systems. The top-loading sample arrangement allows for easy operation and measurement of the temperature directly at the sample. NETZSCH thermobalances have vacuum-tight design and allow for measurement of mass changes under defined atmospheres.

Heated coupling adapters for gas analysis systems can be added on to the thermobalances. TGA is used in R&D of various solid or liquid engineering materials and substances that finding broader applications in the fields of quality control and assurance of raw materials, failure analysis of finished parts in polymer processing industry, organic chemistry, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food industry etc.
