There are three primary methods of welding, each useful for specific applications. Arc welding depends on a power supply to create an electric arc between an electrode and the base material to melt the metals at the welding point. Metal inert gas (MIG) welding creates an electric arc between an electrode and a shielding gas to join metals. Finally, tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding specifically uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode, a shielding gas, and sometimes a filler metal to join metals.
