Sometimes it's necessary to control one or more electrically isolated circuits by utilizing a single low-power signal. In these cases, a relay is used, typically energised by a low-voltage DC charge. From there an internal electromagnet comes to life, forcing one or more internal contacts to change position. Removing the low-voltage DC charge then resets the relay to its original state. Applications of relays include controlling a high-voltage circuit with a low-voltage signal, safety-critical logic circuits and time delay circuits.
