Kieran has bright future in mining industry

Kieran Brooke-Smith’s interest in metal work grew from tinkering in the shed with his dad.

Kieran started with Joy Mining Machinery at Unanderra as a school based apprentice and, showing extraordinary commitment, quickly gained a full time apprenticeship.

Kieran enjoys working with machines on the mining sites and learning about the mining industry.

Kieran was named the 2011 Apprentice of the Year in the Illawarra Region and a finalist for the 2011 NSW Apprentice of the Year Award.

As well as his apprenticeship studies, Kieran has also completed a Diploma in Engineering at TAFE NSW – Illawarra Institute and will commence an Advanced Diploma and a hydraulics course in 2012.

Kieran believes that his studies are providing him with a broad understanding of the industry, will increase his career opportunities and provide him with the qualifications that support his knowledge.

He is currently employed by Hunter Valley Training Company – Southern Tablelands Group Training.

Kieran is very confident in the training and career path he has chosen for himself and looks forward to continuing in the industry and working his way up in the company. Kieran now has apprentices working with him. He enjoys passing his knowledge and skills on and hopes to help them excel in the industry.
