Available now from Mouser Electronics, the SAM R30 radio module from Microchip Technology combines an ultra-low-power microcontroller with a sub-gigahertz radio, making it ideal for indoor industrial IoT applications.
The radio module operates in the ISM bands below 1GHz, such as the 915MHz band used in Australia and North America. The lower telemetry frequency offers improved transmission through partitions and walls compared with the 2.4GHz band that is frequently used for IoT applications
The module comes in a compact 12.7 x 11mm package, housing a 32bit Arm Cortex-M0+ core and up to 256Kbyte of Flash and 40Kbyte of RAM. The radio section delivers a receiver sensitivity up to -105dBm and transmitter output power up to +8.7dBm.
With an ultra-low-power sleep mode of under 800nA, the SAM R30 module is ideal for sensor applications that require long battery life.
For applications support, developers can implement propriety point-to-point, star, or self-healing mesh networks with Microchip’s MiWi protocol stack. And Mouser also stocks an evaluation kit that includes an onboard embedded debugger, QTouch button, two Xplained Pro extension headers, and embedded current measurement circuitry.
The board features both a chip antenna and an SMA connector for an external antenna, a digital temperature sensor, and USB-UART/I2C convertor. The board is supported by the Atmel Studio integrated development platform, which provides ready-written application examples.
