Leading waste and recycling experts will discuss how smartphone apps and other digital tools can help local government and business achieve their waste management and recycling goals at the Australasian Waste and Recycling Expo which begins in Sydney on Thursday.

NSW EPA will lead a panel of experts in a seminar debate and discussion at this year’s Expo, into how digital technology is transforming the way we engage, inform, educate and enforce compliance around waste and recycling.

Other leaders of the Australian waste and recycling industry will join NSW EPA at AWRE’s comprehensive two-day seminar program at Sydney Olympic Park, on Thursday and Friday, including Stan Krpan, Sustainability Victoria CEO, and Stephen Holland, Waste Management Association of Australia Operations Manager.

Brett Judd, AWRE Exhibition Director, said the seminar program covers the latest in government policies, case studies showcasing innovation and best practice, and new products and services in the waste management and resource recovery industry.

“The annual AWRE seminar is a pivotal event for waste management and recycling professionals across business, operations and government sectors,” Mr Judd said.

Key highlights of the AWRE 2014 seminar program include:

·       Stan Krpan, Sustainability Victoria CEO, will deliver a keynote address on Sustainability Victoria’s landmark Statewide Waste and Resource Recovery Infrastructure Plan – a 30 year roadmap to guide future investment in waste management and resource recovery infrastructure to effectively manage the expected mix and increasing volumes of waste generated by Victorian households, businesses and industry.

·       Christopher Allen, NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet Principal Policy Officer, will lead a panel discussion on understanding and influencing behaviour to reduce illegal dumping, as well as increase recycling. World leaders in this space, the NSW Government is using behavioural insights to design and implement better policies and services to help people make better decisions for themselves and society.

·       Steve Beaman, NSW EPA Director Waste and Resource Recovery and Jon Collinge, Better Buildings Partnership Chair will be joined by a panel of experts to discuss business waste, including what both large and small businesses are doing to reduce costs in waste disposal.

·       David Hodge, Plastic Forests Director, will join industry leading innovators for a session on new and innovative solutions to deep-rooted resource management issues. Plastic Forests is an Australian company offering a unique and world first process to create usable plastic products from rescued plastic film. Plastic Forests takes waste plastic from ‘red lid’ garbage bins and recycles it into useful products such as garden edging and cable cover.

The Australasian Waste & Recycling Expo, held at The Sydney Showgrounds, Sydney Olympic Park, is Australia’s longest running and most highly attended waste and recycling trade show.

Visitors can expect to see the latest technology, equipment and waste solutions from more than 100 specialist exhibiters.

The show presents an outstanding opportunity to network with key waste and recycling decision makers from the industry and government under one roof.
