Cook Australia wins top export award

Cook Medical Australia, a globally successful medical device manufacturing company, has won the Premier of Queensland's Tom Burns Award to celebrate an emerging exporter to China or Vietnam.

Now in its 22nd year, the Queensland Export Awards publicly recognise the success and achievements of Queensland's top exporters and their vital role to Australia’s economy and the State.

The Tom Burns Award was established in 2007 in memory of the late Hon Tom Burns AO, an innovator and leader in building export markets and relationships for Queensland in China and Vietnam.

Acting Qld Premier Andrew Fraser presented the award to Cook Medical Australia’s Operations Manager Leigh Huffer at the Export Awards gala dinner presentation at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

“Winning the Tom Burns Award is hugely significant for Cook Medical Australia as it acknowledges our export success to China and validates our export focused strategy, particularly our efforts to grow our export operations to China. This year we doubled the size of our regional warehouse and expanded our offices in China.

“The continued investment in improved logistic capabilities in Asia coupled with manufacturing and support capabilities in Australia has been rewarded by a $15 million growth in export sales over the past financial year. Increased exporting allows continued investment in local research and development which creates added on-shore investment and potentially more jobs for Queenslanders,” said Barry Thomas, Cook Medical Australia’s Vice President and Managing Director.

Cook Medical was also awarded the Advanced Manufacturer of the Year award and the 2011 QJCCI Supreme Exporter of the Year award at the recent Queensland Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QJCCI) Export Excellence Awards.

The QJCCI Export Excellence Awards are run annually in conjunction with the Premier of Queensland's Export Awards. The QJCCI awards aim to showcase and recognise talented and innovative exporters in Queensland and their important role in boosting the State and Australia's economy.

Cook Medical Australia, based in Brisbane, manufactures and exports advanced medical devices including endovascular grafts used in minimally invasive vascular surgery for the treatment of aortic diseases and innovative products for In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).
