Planetary gearheads are a type of transmission system that uses a series of gears to trade off torque and speed to suit the application, effectively improving efficiency and stability over parallel axis gears.
The inner workings of a gearbox utilizing planetary gearheads essentially include a central "sun" gear, one or more outer "planet" gears and an outer ring gear which contains the planet and sun gears. The sun gear drives the planet gears at a different ratio, and they in turn act upon the outer ring gear. This system of gearheads is often integrated with a motor either externally or internally.
In the field of automation, planetary gearheads placed in servo controls or coupled with motors typically lead to more controlled precise actions, necessary within many production environments. The fields of robotics, assembly and machine tooling all benefit from planetary gearhead technology. You can too by checking out Industry Update's component and supplier listings.
