SEW on the ‘ball’ on New Year’s Eve

Drive solutions specialist, SEW-Eurodrive, will play a key role in the 2009/2010 New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square, New York City.

A custom-made winch system used to lower the famous New Year’s Eve Ball will be driven by a 30kW SEW-Eurodrive gearmotor, delivering a high-level combination of reliability and performance.

The NYE Ball will be lowered slowly, travelling just 21m over the final minute of the year – this speed of descent translates to about 6rpm in the gearmotor’s output shaft.

“Drive applications like this one call for innovative solutions,” said SEW-Eurodrive Australia managing director, Rob Merola.

“Traditionally, this event is viewed by millions of people, so it’s crucial that only reliable,high-performance technologies are used. SEW-Eurodrive is proud to be a part of such an iconic event.”
