After finishing her HSC, Gabriella Morona undertook a Rural Skills-Agriculture Certificate lll traineeship, working on the family farm in Deniliquin.
Having assisted on the farm for many years, Gabriella took the opportunity to complete formal training and gain a deeper and broader understanding of the agricultural industry, and to make sure this was the right career for her.
With a passion for the industry and for learning, Gabriella excelled in her traineeship, taking every opportunity to participate in field days, information sessions, industry forums, and additional roles on the farm. She also learned about time management in a seasonal environment, business communication skills, built her confidence in showing and explaining crops and livestock to buyers, and learned to operate and maintain a new range of machinery.
Gabriella was named the 2010 NSW and Australian Trainee of the Year.
“Winning the award has allowed me to establish great networks within my community and industry, and offered me some amazing opportunities, says Gabriella. “The NSW Training Awards raise the profile of vocational education and training as a valid educational and career pathway.”
Gabriella has since gone on to receive the Conargo Shire Young Australian of the Year Award as well an Australian Rice Industry Scholarship in recognition of her potential as a future industry leader.
Gabriella is now in her second year of a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics. Having her skills and training recognised formally through her traineeship has given her a great head start.
She also has the advantage and confidence of understanding the reality of a fully operational farm and of the many challenges of this competitive industry.
Gabriella believes the combination of her traineeship and current university studies will put her in a great position to contribute to the future of the agricultural industry.
